You can automate a variety of tasks using "micros" (macro) in Microsoft Excel. A micro is a type of script that, once recorded, can be run repeatedly, increasing the speed of work in Excel. How to install a micro in Excel is easy, and to learn it, follow the following steps:
1. Activate the Developer tab
- This tab is hidden by default.
- To activate it, go to the File option at the top in Excel.
- Then click on Options and go to the Customize Ribbon section.
- Check the Developer box here and press OK
Now the Developer tab will appear in your Excel sheet.
2. Record the macro
- Go to the Developer tab and click on Record Macro. Now a new window will open in front of you.
- Give a name to the macro here. Note that the name of the macro should be without spaces, such as "Format data".
- Assign a shortcut key so that you can run it quickly from the keyboard (example: Ctrl+Shift+F).
- Choose the option Store Macro in, which is usually "This Workbook".
- Then click OK.
3 . Record your work in the mic
- Now perform the task you want to automate in Excel. Micro is recording every click and formatting.
- For example, if you want to bold and center a column, select that column, then click the Bold button and the Center button.
4. Stop the mic recording pi
- When your work is recorded, go to the Developer tab again and click on Stop Recording. This will stop the mic recording.
5. Running the Micro
- Now whenever you want to perform the same task again, you can run the micro.
- Click on Macros in the Developer tab.
- Select the name of your micro and click on Run.
Or, if you have set up a shortcut key, you can also launch the micro by pressing it.
6. Edit Macro
- To edit a micro, go to the Developer tab and click on Macros.
- Select the name of your micro and click on Edit.
- This will open in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications), where you can make changes to the code.
Some precautions
- Take care of security while using microcontrollers. Do not run microcontrollers from external sources in Excel without checking them as they may contain viruses.
- If you are not good at VBA coding, use the recording mode which will not require you to code.
Example
Suppose you need to format the data for each month, you can create a micro that:
- Bolds all text
- Highlights headers in one color.
- Centers columns.
Once you record it once, you can do the formatting the next time with just one click.
Result
Using a micro saves time, and there is no need to repeat the work again and again.
